A company created by academics, for academics

eLumen’s foundation is deeply rooted in the academic world. The concept for a powerful, learning-focused assessment solution began in the 1990s at the University of Minnesota among persons who later became the leadership for eLumen Collaborative. It continued when Dr. David Shupe became the Vice President of Academic Affairs at Inver Hills Community College and then later System Director for Academic Accountability for the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system. Seeing the need for a more holistic and forward-thinking assessment process, he worked in each setting to develop the concepts that later became the foundation of eLumen™. Paired with recent advances in technology, his work soon revealed a wealth of potential for advances in assessment and student learning. He partnered with colleagues and software developers with the experience and skills to turn this vision into reality, and eLumen Collaborative was born.

eLumen has a strong history of listening to its clients; its leaders know what it is like to work inside academic institutions. Since the beginning, eLumen responded to the needs of specific institutions by designing solutions for their requested features and functions and providing them to everyone at no additional cost. eLumen’s features have continually grown in sophistication and scope to meet changing institutional needs. eLumen continues to place a high value on these reciprocal, mutually-beneficial relationships with its clients.

By consulting with clients from the start and continuing to offer support as part of a standard installation, eLumen is able to focus on how the clients are actually using the software, discovering which features are most useful and which ones could be expanded for greater functionality. Additionally, because eLumen has strong roots in the academic world, its own leadership team is constantly considering new ways to realize their vision of academic institutions focused on student achievement.
